Ada Lewis House Women's Lodging House Historic England

Dalmeny Avenue in Islington has provided housing for those most in need for over a hundred years and Ada Lewis House was the epitome of new hostels for working women. Funded by Ada herself, it opened in 1913 through her concerns for the lack of decent housing for single, low-waged, working women. Ada the wife of Samuel Lewis, launched the Samuel.

The house is named after Ada Lewis, a campaigner for social housing who founded a hostel on the site 100 years ago so single women could find a safe and affordable home in London. Tenants include pensioners, students and people with mental illness and disability.

Ada Lewis House was named after an Edwardian philanthropist, and sits beside the venue which hosts the Fever-Tree Championships, previously won by Andy Murray and Marin Čilić. It was built during the 1920s as a hostel for single women by the Samuel Lewis Housing Trust, named after Ada's husband who died in 1901.
