You can find two-voice poems in a plethora of children's poetry books. In this post, I've curated a list of my favorite two-voice poems and the books you'll find them in. Some of my fellow poets graciously granted permission to share their poems, so they are ready use as mentor texts.

" The Two Voices " is a poem written by future Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom Alfred, Lord Tennyson between 1833 and 1834. It was included in his 1842 collection of Poems. Tennyson wrote the poem, titled "Thoughts of a Suicide" in manuscript, after the death of his friend Arthur Henry Hallam in 1833. The poem was autobiographical. [1]

The first step in creating poems in two voices is to discern and list the similarities and differences between two entities. For example, when learning about the deer and the lion and their natural relationship, a student made notes about the deer and lion, then created a chart (Figure 2).

Poems for two voices are poems that are written specifically for two people (or two groups of people) to perform out loud together. Each person usually reads some lines out loud solo, and then both people read some lines together. Here's an example of a poem I wrote for two voices:

If you have never read a poem for two voices, it is like a see saw. Two people take turns with the different sides, alternating lines. If the two parts are written directly across from each other, both people read them at the exact same time, expressing two different thoughts in the air at once. It was fun to experiment with this kind of writing.

January 26, 2022 I love poems for two voices, and this form is really fun for students to perform, discuss, and write. Here's a poem for two voices from In the Middle of the Night. Try reading the poem out loud with two students or two groups. One is the voice of the flip flops, and the other is the voice of the winter boots.

Write a poem for two voices. Although "The Catnap" does not strictly follow this format, many poems for two voices explore both the different perspectives and the similarities between two sides or "characters," just like a dialogue between two people.

Two voice Poems
The definition of two-voice poetry is that it's a poem where there are two different voices speaking, two "narrators" of the poem. These voices usually go back and forth and dialogue with each other, sharing their differing perspectives. Sometimes you talk separately, and other times, you speak in unison.
